Facial Scrub 101: How Often Should You Exfoliate?

A facial scrub can make dull skin look fresher in a single use, which is exactly why it’s so easy to overdo. The short answer to “how often?” is once or twice a week for most people, up to three times for resilient, oily skin, and never every day. The right number depends on your skin, so here’s how to find it.

Why exfoliate at all

Your skin sheds dead cells constantly, but not always evenly. When they build up, skin looks dull and rough, makeup sits unevenly, and products absorb less well. Exfoliating removes that layer so skin looks brighter and smoother. It doesn’t change your skin permanently, which is why the benefit fades and needs repeating.

Physical vs chemical exfoliation

  • Physical exfoliants (scrubs) use fine grains to buff dead cells away by hand.
  • Chemical exfoliants use acids such as AHAs and BHAs to loosen those cells.

Neither is better by default. The mistake is using both heavily in the same week. Pick one as your main method and add the other only if your skin handles it comfortably.

How often, by skin type

  • Oily or resilient skin: two to three times a week.
  • Normal or combination skin: once or twice a week.
  • Dry skin: once a week, or less.
  • Sensitive skin: every seven to ten days with very light pressure, or skip scrubs and ask a dermatologist about gentler options.
  • Active, inflamed acne, rosacea or eczema: don’t scrub those areas. Ask a dermatologist first.

Signs you’re overdoing it

Tightness after washing, redness, stinging when you apply products that normally feel fine, a shiny, stretched look, flaking and sudden breakouts all mean your skin barrier is irritated. Stop scrubbing for one to two weeks, keep your routine simple and moisturize.

What to look for in a scrub

Choose fine, rounded grains. Crushed shells or pits with sharp edges can create tiny tears in the skin. A good scrub also has a conditioning base, such as oils or glycerin, so skin isn’t left tight. And use a scrub made for the face. Body scrubs use coarser grains that are too harsh here.

Where Kawar’s Facial Scrub fits

Kawar’s Dead Sea Facial Scrub uses fine Dead Sea sand sized for facial skin, with argan oil, chamomile and glycerin to keep skin comfortable. The brand recommends using it at least once a week and not more than two to three times. Its body scrub uses larger grains, so keep that one below the neck.

How to scrub step by step

  1. Do it in the evening, on a clean face, and follow the directions on the label.
  2. Take a small amount and massage in gentle circles for 30 to 60 seconds. Let the grains do the work. Pressure doesn’t help.
  3. Avoid the eye area and lips.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry.
  5. Moisturize right away. A moisturizing face cream or a hydrating serum works well.
  6. Use sunscreen the next morning, since freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to UV.

What to skip on scrub nights

Don’t layer other strong actives (retinoids, acids, vitamin C at high strength) on the same night. Let the skin rest, and use only a gentle cleansing milk and moisturizer. Our daily skincare routine guide shows where exfoliation fits in a week, and the Facial Care collection has the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a facial scrub every day?
No. Daily scrubbing weakens the skin barrier and usually leads to irritation, dryness or breakouts.

Should I choose a scrub or a chemical exfoliant?
Either works. Choose one as your main method. Sensitive skin often prefers a gentle chemical exfoliant, while many people enjoy the feel of a fine scrub.

Do men need a facial scrub?
The same rules apply. Gentle exfoliation can help with dullness and with the rough, clogged areas that shaving can cause.

Does a facial scrub shrink pores?
Pore size is largely genetic. A scrub clears debris so pores look smaller, but it can’t change their size.

Should I scrub before or after cleansing?
After cleansing is the usual approach, but follow the directions on your product, since some scrubs are designed for dry skin.

Can I scrub if I have pimples?
Avoid scrubbing inflamed pimples, since it spreads irritation. Scrub only calm areas, or ask a dermatologist for acne-specific advice.
